Crater Lake formed over the past 7700 years after Mount Mazama erupted so violently that it caused the mountain to collapse leaving a caldera. Crater Lake came to be as snow melt and rainwater filled the caldera over the past 7700 years. Crater Lake reaches to 1,943 feet deep making it the deepest lake in the United States of America, as well as the seventh deepest lake in the world. Crater Lake is a part of Crater Lake National Park which was founded on May 22, 1902. The island that sits in the west side of Crater Lake is Wizard Island. The water is clear enough to see 80-115 feet down.
